The Newark High School Bands exist to serve the needs of all students enrolled at Newark High School. While much of the focus is on Instrumental Performance, the overall goal of this program is to instill in each NHS Band student an appreciation for music and a life-long mission to continue their appreciation and study of the musical arts.
The Concert Bands are the foundation of the band department and the basis on which the other performing groups may continue to grow and flourish. While there are many performance opportunities available to all Newark High School students, the fundamentals of musical performance and technique learned in the concert band setting apply to the other ensembles as well.
The performance of music in the public setting is the most obvious goal of all performing groups, yet it is not the only goal to be achieved in this area.
The most important attribute to a student’s development, be it musical or non-musical, is the ability to self-assess one’s situation and do what is necessary to correct mistakes. The classroom provides us with an avenue to reach out to students and provide them with an opportunity to grow, both musically and as young adults.
We offer music classes in the public schools because it is unique and an essential part of everyone’s daily lives. As teachers, we are responsible for not just teaching our subject material, but also to teach the entire student. Music is an art that allows students to be emotional without words, and nurtures and develops the human spirit. By offering music in the public schools, we allow our students to have a safe, healthy activity that has been proven to be nothing but beneficial to the psyche of all participants.
Students are encouraged to take as many performance opportunities as possible to develop their sound and ability level on their chosen instrument. Private lessons are also encouraged for every member of any ensemble, in order to individually hone their skill to use during class and performances. Individuals that are considering music as a career should take advantage of all performance opportunities they can, along with private lessons to set themselves up for success at the collegiate level.
